26th of June - Update Notes

Player Character

image

Archetype

* The bonus magical damage granted from Mystical Attunement has been doubled for Mages.
* Spells that were incorrectly receiving bonuses from increased magical damage will no longer scale with increased magical damage. This adjustment will only affect such spells that were not meant to have scaling with the increased magical damage bonus. This resolves issues with enhancement spells like “Pact with Set” where the health loss was too high for the trade off for the bonus to damage.

Barbarians

* An issue where Barbarians lose strength between the levels of 42 and 45 has been resolved. Please note that this is only between those specific levels.

Demonologist

* Infernal Knowledge and Diabolic Insight will no longer appear as hostile spells and will still persist after death.

Necromancer

* The bonus gained from magical damage has been increased on all damage-over-time (DoT) spells.
* Despoil the Soul duration has been substantially increased and is no longer removed on death.
* Frost Blast’s area-of-effect (AoE) has been changed to be a 90 degree cone in front of the caster.
* Shatter now additionally works on targets affected by Frost Blast and Ice Shackle.
* Dark Knowledge and Vile Insight will no longer appear as hostile spells and will still persist after death.
* Mark of the Devourer duration has been reduced to 60 seconds.

Stats explained

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Attack Rating, Defense Rating, Magic Rating (this includes specialized Magic Ratings) and Magical Resist are the “big 4″ stats in terms of comparing attackers to defenders in the game.

The opposing stats are, as may be obvious:

  • Attack Rating vs. Defense Rating
  • Magic Rating (+Specialized Rating) vs. Magical Resist

In normal combat, if the attacker’s offensive rating is lower than the defender’s defensive rating, the damage will be reduced. Likewise, if the attacker’s offensive rating is higher than the defender’s defensive rating, the damage will be increased.

When attack and defense ratings are equal, the damage dealt will be the “normal” value of the attack, spell, or ability.

Heroic rating works mostly the same; however it is limited in when it can apply. It only applies if that rating is lower than an opposing rating.

Error code 103: Update did not complete successfully

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

chalupa3266 from the Age of Conan forums has found a solution to the slightly annoying “Error code 103: Update did not complete successfully“.  Apparently, all you need to do is the following:

in my patcher.log I noticed:

[2008-06-16 23:31:49,0] [Patcher] RDB/RDBHashIndex.bin has wrong hash (6091ccf8ff136df3a03acd487f7f6148 != 33a4dcafe01847d5297405c9c1c6c1f2)
[2008-06-16 23:31:49,0] [HTTPManager] Files:0/1 (0.0/0.0 MB) Idle
[2008-06-16 23:31:49,0] [HTTPManager] http://aoc-us-update.live.ageofconan…405c9c1c6c1f2: failed with error 302

So I deleted the RDB/RDBHashIndex.bin , and re-run AoC and it went and got it again, then it started patching…

Check your patcher.log (should be in root folder of AoC) and open it in wordpad and go all the way to the bottom and see what file caused the patcher to hang and delete it before running the updates.

Hopefully this helps any of you experiencing this error so you can get back to leveling your overpowered Tempest of Set or Priest of Mitra.

Are the Community Managers really doing their job?

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Recently on the forums, there has been quite an uproar over the fact that there are rarely, if ever, any posts by Community Managers (CMs) or Devs relaying information or updates to the community. Cries of abysmal customer service are being posted constantly on the forums. The player base feels that there needs to be more of an open line of communication so that the players are feeling less in the dark about current problems.

There is often the comparison from the Age of Conan CMs to the World of Warcraft CMs. The CMs of WoW are posting daily on the forums updating the players on future updates and just making it known that they are there and that they care. Where is this in AoC?

Newsletter reveals major changes ahead

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Michael Zenke from Massively has written up a nice summary of the upcoming changes and additions to Age of Conan which will hopefully sort out of some of the major problems with the current state of the game.

It’s only been a short time since Age of Conan launched, but it has already seen some troubles. The newest edition of the game newsletter hints that good times are just over the horizon. Above and beyond bug fixing and regular patches, Funcom has announced they have a slew of new concepts and content ideas on the stove. Here are the highlights from the newsletter:

  • Game director Gaute Godager answers a few questions we haven’t seen addressed anywhere else. Primarily involving guild systems and tradeskilling, the quickie Q&A shouldn’t take you long to read.
  • The team is introducing a sort of alternate advancement system they’re calling Power Points. Points are similar to but not exactly like the “AAs” from games like EQ. You’ll earn them just by having an open account, and it sounds like down the road new content will drop specifically for characters with enought PP.
  • A number of changes to guilds, guild housing, and the introduction of guild alliances are all discussed on the official site.
  • The newsletter goes back over all the patches they’ve dropped since launch, particularly noting the addition of unique dances for each race.
  • Funcom is completely revamping Age of Conan’s PvP. They’re adding PvP-specific leveling, consequences in the form of the ‘fugitive system’, and a number of tweaks and changes to the art of player on player war.
  • A number of quests past level 20 are getting voice over elements added in. The website lists every one they’re working on, and in total this forms a specific storyline the developers want you to be sure to follow.
  • A better interface for chat and guild management will soon be available.
  • The Pyramid of the Ancients and Treasury of the Ancients in Khopshef Province will be getting bottom-to-top revamps.
  • A whole new dungeon will be added to Thunder River. No firm details, but they did release some concept art - the same art that was ‘leaked’ to the US forums earlier this week.
  • They’re also planning an all new outdoor area called Ymir’s Pass, which plans to fill a few holes in late-game leveling.

Be sure to check out the Age of Conan - Newsletter #17 for full details. Also check out the interview with Gaute Godager for some answers to questions the player base has been asking.
